- Singing Technique
It's not called singing technique for nothing. "Vocalist", "Recording Artist" - these are terms designated to a special skill, the art of professional singing. We are not talking about singing in the shower, or busting a rap in the garage. Many music artists, especially old school music artists, experience success in the music business because they are talented vocalists. There is a huge difference between world class musicians and those who think they are singers. If you are not professionally trained, professionally performing (getting paid) or professionally studying (college curriculum or vocal instruction) it's time to get busy.
Again, I believe you must pay your dues. Music artists that you might think had instant singing success, probably did not spring up overnight. Long term success in the music industry is challenging as a vocalist. Your voice is an instrument and must be trained, played and maintained properly. A recording artist is just that, an artist. Can you paint a professional painting? Maybe. Can you sing a song professionally? Maybe. Just as an artist needs skill and training to paint a masterpiece, a vocalist needs music skills and training to be worthy of world class musicianship. Most professional singers have natural talent, but most also have formal training. Believe it.
Gaining experience and formal training are the 2 most important things you can do as aspiring singers. Search for talent auditions, search for a singing contest, search for vocal tryouts - any tryouts. Then enter a talent contest, singing contest, vocal tryout, or recording competition. It's good to compete against other singing talent to see how you stack up. Just as singers do on shows like American Idol, Singing Bee, and America's Got Talent. You must be ready to search and work your talent.
Free Singing Tips
1 ) Do not hold your breath while singing. Airflow shapes and supports your vocal instrument tone - keep the airflow strong. Do not breath from your stomach, breathe from the bottom of your lungs - your diaphragm. (diaphragmatic breathing)
2 ) Listen for the note intervals in your head before singing them. Don't guess at a music or vocal pitch.
3 ) Strengthen your abdomen, back and rib muscles to gain powerful singing strength. Situps or repetition of an abdomen strength training machine like an "ablounge" is best. Remember to keep your back straight and shoulders down in a relaxed position.
4 ) Experiment with different music styles. Each type of music creates alternate vocal inflections which will give you well rounded versatility.
5 ) Sell your singing message and song emotion to your audience. Mistakes will be made in any performance. Sing through any errors - like you mean it.
6 ) Keep your vocal chords elastic. Vocal folds are muscles that need to be worked properly and maintained. The oscillation of the vocal chords is easier to control when used properly. Exercise your vocal chords on a regular workout schedule.
7 ) Don't smoke, don't yell, don't talk too much. Keep singing and good luck!
