Vocal Producers
- Life in the Fast Lane
Most of this applies to artists, but much of it is related to the industry and becoming a music producer. Contrary to popular belief, most of the highly talented producers are
also world class musicians. The challenging news is that there are thousands of small labels. A major label may sign less than 10 new artists per year. In many cases, those contracts serve more as a retainer than a record deal. It prohibits the artist from signing with anyone else, but promises the artist very little. Many signed music artists never record or get airplay.
The business is very upside down. The music business is mostly about marketing and money, and sometimes music. People hear a song on the radio and think it is popular or that the band is one of the best bands. Getting airplay is a 13 step process. Songs are played on the radio because the labels decide which songs they want to promote, and pay the radio industry accordingly. Not a singing contest.
These days, everyone has a recording facility. Owning your own studio or label held a lot more value in the past. Locally, it's all about finding your niche. I believe you have your niche. Musically, it's about expressing and combining your own ideas. In rap and hip hop especially, everyone wants to sound like every other rapper. Be Unique.
I believe music is heading back to it's roots. Funk, jazz and R&B are the sounds of the future, not hip hop. Old school is in. My advice, learn to play an instrument. (Multiple instruments). Learn to compose music. Start making your own music with your computer. Music software, a soundcard and a microphone are cheap. Performing and recording are 2 totally different talents. That's why it is called "recording artist". You find out a lot about your talent when working with your recordings.
Network with other musicians locally. Start a music group and play some public performances. Most of all, be patient and pay your dues. You are either in the music business for the rest of your life, or you are not. Television has jaded the public and made it look easy to succeed. It is not easy, and it is not quick.
Talented singers and producers are everywhere. Talent is not enough in the music business. It takes a fortunate combination of elements to succeed. You must do 5 things very well, not just 1. Success in the music business is not getting a record deal. Signing with a major label is rare. Success is earning your living as a musician, a player, a producer. Performing, recording, studio sessions, scoring music for independent films, working in a music group at a theme park, singing at weddings, performing for corporations at conventions, etc. All at the local level. This is how 95% of all musicians experience success in the business.
If you can do that full time, make all of your income from music, you have success. The rest will fall into place around your local music success. Once you have some demo music recorded, get a professional photo of yourself and start a website. You can have all of your promo online. Singing contests, auditions and tryouts will come easier. Recording tips and techniques make all the difference in your final product. Keep singing, and good luck!
